American Eden: Landscape Painting 1825 to 1870 Study Leader: David Click After the American Revolution, Americans searched for a unique American style in art and in literature. Starting in 1825, landscape painters created a romanticized view of nature and the purity of the American country as an American Eden. This course will cover American landscape painters starting with Cole, Durand, and Church through the expansion of ideas and techniques from Kensett, Gifford, Bierstadt, and Moran. It is also the story of America, from the Hudson Valley as the Garden of Eden through the expansion to the west as the promised land.
