❆️ Icicles on your mind? Probably not. But August is actually a great time to be thinking about tightening up your house to stay snug in the chilly months ahead and slashing your heating bills at the same time.

🪟🪟 Enter WINDOW DRESSERS! 🪟 Window Dressers is a nonprofit dedicated to helping reduce wasted energy by offering inexpensive, energy-efficient, interior window inserts.

In most homes, the windows are, by far, where most heat is lost. With Window Dressers’ custom-fitted inserts, your heat is kept inside. Two layers of very clear plastic are held apart by a simple, but attractive, wood frame. The inserts are super light and easy to pop in in the fall and pop out in spring. The cost is modest because everyone pitches in to assemble them.

Here’s how it works:
❆ You learn more about the window inserts on the Web – www.windowdressers.org. You order inserts for your home right there, but you pay only when your window openings are measured.
❆ A local volunteer calls and sets up an appointment to measure your windows.
❆ A team of two trained volunteers comes and measures each of your window openings using precise infra-red technology. At that time, you pay for the inserts based primarily on square footage. Expect about $55 total for a typical window insert. If you can’t afford the full cost, you pay what you can afford, right down to zero.
❆ You join the “community build.” Sign up for one or more 4-hour shifts, joining your neighbors in assembling inserts. For homes in Newbury, Topsham, Corinth, Vershire and Chelsea, the build is during the week of November 12-18 at the Corinth Town Hall.
❆ You bring your finished inserts home and pop them into their designated window openings.

You can expect the inserts to last for years. Depending on how tight your house is to start, the “payback period” in energy cost savings is generally 1-3 years.
