Game Camera Tricks and Tips Wednesday, August 19 4:00pm - 6:30pm Wolf Tree Forest, 1630 Country Club Rd. Brandon Learn from our mistakes how to capture photos or videos of the animals in your neighborhood or forest. We’ll talk about camera types and settings and where and how to place cameras for best results depending on your goals. After some discussion and looking at examples, we’ll spend about an hour in the woods looking at where some of our photos were taken and choose a spot and set a camera. We'll provide wood-fired pizza and some drinks after we get back from the woods. Feel free to bring your choice of beverages and plan to connect about the woodlands and wildlife in our region. Volunteer Work Party: Honeysuckle Removal at Mayo Farm Friday, August 21 2:00pm – 4:00pm Mayo Farm, Stowe Roll up your sleeves and help us tackle invasive honeysuckle at Mayo Farm. These aggressive shrubs can quickly take over natural areas, outcompeting native plants like wildflowers, ferns, and young trees. Learn more and register here. Snake Monitoring with Luke Groff Monday, Aug 24 5:30pm – 7:30pm Smokey House Center, 426 Danby Mountain Rd, Danby Join Smokey House as we host Luke Groff, Herpetologist with the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department for an introduction to snake monitoring and snake conservation in Vermont. Last year, Luke installed a series of "snake boards" across Smokey House Center's landscape, a monitoring tool that creates habitat to help researchers inventory snake populations on the property. Participants will learn how the boards work, why monitoring snakes matter, and what species may be found on our landscape. Learn more and register here. Bats, Forests, and Vernal Pools: An Evening at King Farm Wednesday, August 26 6:00pm - 8:00pm King Farm, Woodstock Discover the hidden world of VT’s bats and the forests they depend on. Join VT Land Trust, Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller NHP and researcher Jessica Jones of Dartmouth College for an evening exploring how forest management, vernal pools, and healthy ecosystems support one of our most important (and misunderstood) groups of wildlife. Join us and Vermont Reptile and Amphibian Atlas herpetologists for a presentation to learn about species in the Northeast Kingdom region and learn how wetlands benefit them and us alike. Fred and Chris Pratt Memorial Bird Walk Saturday, August 29 7:30am - 10:00am Pratt Refuge, Duxbury Fred and Chris Pratt, longtime bird enthusiasts, thoughtful land stewards, and Coverts Cooperators conserved The Pratt Refuge in Duxbury with the VT Land Trust a quarter of a century ago. This birding hotspot is a stopover for migratory birds, including the Hermit Thrush, our state bird. Fred donated the refuge to VLT and they have worked to improve the facilities and public access. Join in remembering the generosity of Chris and Fred by strolling the trails. Birds will be identified by sight and sound on the guided walks led by veteran birders from the Mad Birders.
