Subject: Hanover Garden Club September 1 Program at the Montshire
Of Plants, Packets, Pots & Promise: The Buying and Selling of Seeds and Plants in America with Kevin Bragg Tuesday, September 1, 20261–2:30 pm Montshire Museum of Science 1 Montshire Road, Norwich, VT 05055 Come explore the history of seed and plant commerce in America and the people—Bartram, Burbank, Burpee, and Ball—behind the development of the country’s plant industry. Using contemporary accounts, drawings, lithographs, and photos, Kevin Bragg’s illustrated presentation follows the evolution of seed packaging and catalogs, the intrigue of plants from “the new world” and afar, scientific advancements, and cultural shifts, creating a fascinating story that has led to today’s modern breeding, marketing, and selling of plants. From subsistence farming to ornamental landscaping, this is the story of the American business behind creating our own garden utopia. Kevin is the owner of Canterbury Plantation, a specialty grower of heirloom and modern annuals, perennials, herbs, and veggies. His almost 40-year involvement in horticulture has included retail and wholesale growing and sales, breeder and distribution relations, USDA/NASS agricultural surveying, as well as manager of horticulture at Canterbury Shaker Village. This adult program is part of a series produced by the Hanover Garden Club in partnership with the Montshire Museum of Science. Free of charge and open to the public, the program will be held in person with a Zoom option. Register for the Zoom registration link at https://www.hanovergardenclubnh.org/educational-programs.
